E Ink art is artwork specifically created, selected, or optimized to display well on E Ink and ePaper technology. Because E Ink displays have specific visual characteristics, the best art for them tends to favor high contrast, strong composition, negative space, and tonal restraint rather than photographic complexity or saturated color.

A standard digital picture frame uses an LCD screen with continuous backlighting and power draw. An E Ink frame uses bistable paper-like display technology that holds an image without any power after loading. E Ink displays are readable in bright light, do not glow in dark rooms, and feel visually closer to a printed photograph than a screen.

E Ink displays favor artwork with strong contrast, clear edges, and deliberate use of negative space. Monochrome photography, line art, botanical illustration, architectural drawing, sumi-e ink work, geometric abstraction, and generative monochrome all perform well. Photographic images with fine gradients can work with good dithering preparation.

Some E Ink displays support limited color through ACeP or Spectra 6 technology. These panels can show 4-7 colors simultaneously. The color range is muted and painterly rather than vibrant, which actually suits many botanical, landscape, and fine art styles well. Standard E Ink displays are grayscale only.

E Ink displays only consume power when updating the image. Once loaded, the image remains visible at near-zero power consumption. A typical E Ink art frame uses between 0 and 5 milliwatts in static display mode, compared to 10-30 watts for a comparable LCD screen. Battery-powered E Ink frames can often display a static image for weeks or months on a single charge.
